If the legendary Sherpa models from Enicar conquered Everest and the ocean depths, then the MRO Star Jewels series was created to conquer high-society gatherings and executive offices. The presented specimen from the early 70s is a rare combination of manufacture perfection and exquisite design, preserved to this day in NOS (New Old Stock) condition with barely noticeable traces of time, which only emphasize its authenticity.
The MRO series is one of the most discussed and enigmatic pages in Enicar's history. Unlike the famous Sherpa line, named directly after Everest expeditions, the MRO abbreviation still lacks a single official deciphering, which only adds a special collector's charm and mystique to these watches.
Among brand connoisseurs, there are three main versions regarding the origin of this name. The most popular theory claims it stands for "Marine — Route — Ocean," symbolizing the watch's versatility: readiness for challenges on water, on land, and in the ocean depths. Another, more technical version suggests decoding it as "Modern — Robust — Original," which perfectly described Enicar's philosophy in the 70s. The third, most romantic version links the name to the brand's astronomical ambitions, where Saturn on the logo and the mysterious letters were meant to emphasize the cosmic precision of the movements.
The main visual feature of the model is its deep chocolate dial with a sunburst effect. Combined with gold indices and a massive cushion-shaped case, the watch looks incredibly warm and aristocratic. The "New Old Stock" condition has preserved the sharpness of the factory edges and the perfect geometry of the case. Slight traces of time, acquired over decades of careful storage, do not spoil the look, but rather emphasize the respectable age and authenticity of the piece.
The technical heart of the watch is the rare in-house Enicar AR 161 movement. The "Star Jewels" inscription on the dial attests to a higher quality standard and the brand's special certification system, which guaranteed flawless component finishing. The caseback is a separate art form, featuring the signature bas-relief of a dolphin and Saturn—a symbol of the era when Enicar was a true manufacture creating its own calibers.
The collector's value is complemented by a vintage strap from the elite Austrian brand Heru. Crafted from high-quality leather with textured embossing, it perfectly highlights the color scheme of the dial.
This is a watch for those seeking not just a famous name, but genuine engineering history embodied in metal. The Enicar MRO is a rare opportunity to touch the "golden era" of Swiss manufactures, when every element was created with a passion for perfection.

BRAND HISTORY
BRAND HISTORY
It all began in 1913 in the city of La Chaux-de-Fonds. Founder Ariste Racine faced a dilemma: he could not name the brand after himself because the trademark "Racine" already existed. He came up with a brilliantly simple solution—he spelled his surname backward. Thus, Enicar was born.
Unlike many brands of that era that merely purchased ready-made movements and cased them, Enicar was a true manufacture. They developed and produced their own in-house calibers (marked AR), which were renowned for their durability. The company was also a pioneer in the use of ultrasonic cleaning (Ultrasonic) for movements, a technology that significantly extended the life of the lubricants.
The turning point came in 1956. A Swiss expedition to Everest and Lhotse selected Enicar as its official partner. The watches on the climbers' wrists withstood the grueling conditions of the Himalayan high altitude. It was following this triumph that the cult Sherpa line was born—a symbol of absolute reliability.
By the 1960s, Enicar had become an icon of motorsport. They were worn by the legendary racer Stirling Moss and Formula 1 champion Jim Clark. The brand became synonymous with speed, risk, and success.
The 1970s in Enicar's history were marked by a transition to bold geometric shapes and the futuristic aesthetics that dominated the design of that time. It was a flourishing period for lines that combined the brand's legendary sporting endurance with a refined style for everyday life. The manufacture continued to perfect its own calibers, introducing complex functions and vibrant gradient dials, which became the calling card of the era. It was during this time that the brand's signature symbols—the planet Saturn and the dolphin on the caseback—were firmly established, embodying the company's aspiration for cosmic precision and reliable movement protection. This period became the final chord of Enicar's technical independence, demonstrating the manufacture's ability to create watches that harmoniously blended engineering complexity with avant-garde design.
Unfortunately, the "Quartz Crisis" of the 1980s led to the demise of the old Enicar manufacture. Today, the brand's vintage models represent an exclusive club for collectors. Acquiring such a watch means owning a piece of great history that can never be repeated.
